GET Immersion Experience Employers

There is a diverse group of large global enterprises that participate in the GET IE program, with more joining each year.  Employer participants for 2012 include Bloomberg, Cisco, Ernst & Young, JPMorgan Chase, Nationwide, and WellPoint.

Each company offers opportunities for students to experience working with information technology on a global scale.  Jobs in the past have included opportunities to work as an application developer, business analyst, software tester, systems implementation analyst, and network analyst.  Students have worked across many company locations including New York City, Delaware, North Carolina, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Ohio.

Key Company Components for Sponsorship

Each sponsoring company provides the following key components of the program.

  • TYPE OF WORK: Employers provide students with the opportunity to work on projects related to large systems within a global context.  Student responsibilities can be varied, but roles might include application development, project management, or business analysis within a global technology-focused organization within the corporation.
  • INTERNSHIP SUPERVISION: Each intern has an immediate supervisor to guide the student through the work assignment

  • EVALUATION OF THE INTERN'S PERFORMANCE: The intern's manager shares the intern's tasks and performance evaluation with the assigned faculty advisor.

  • MENTORING: Each student is assigned a mentor to help provide them with a broader understanding of the enterprise organization

Become a GET Immersion Experience Employer

By joining the Immersion Experience program, you will have the opportunity to hire students for the unique opportunity to participate in an eight-month internship while continuing studies that directly relate with their work experience.  Syracuse University partners with such schools as University of Delaware, Ohio State University, Drew University, Rutgers University, and LeMoyne College to provide qualified candidates for the program.

Participating employers have seen great value in the program.  Some of the key benefits they have found in the program include the ability to:

  • Build a pipeline of future talent who possess company-specific experience in large-scale, global enterprise technology.
  • Gain enhanced productivity from longer term interns.
  • Obtain a completed proposal on an IT-enabled innovative project with strategic importance to your company.

Fresh Perspectives on Internal Challenges

Unlike many shorter internship experiences, the GET Immersion Experience is designed not only to provide a rich work experience for students, but also provides integrated, faculty-led parallel course work over the same period that encourages students to reflect on their experiences, sharing them with other interns working in the same company and, as appropriate, with interns from other companies.
Toward the conclusion of their Immersion Experience, the interns convert this reflection into a formal presentation to their senior management on insights gained during their experience such as:

  • aspects of the experience that were positive,
  • aspects of the experience that they felt could be improved,
  • lessons learned and/or valuable experiences that helped them understand the workings of business better, and
  • areas where they, as technologically savvy interns, feel the organization's technology could be improved to help solve business challenges.

Selecting GET Immersion Experience Interns

Students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 may apply for a position in the GET Immersion Experience in October of their sophomore or junior year. Interviewing is conducted by sponsoring companies with scheduling and logistical assistance from Syracuse University. Each sponsoring company selects the students who they believe will best fit their organization. Ideally, a GET Immersion Experience sponsoring company will hire four or more interns depending on the availability of projects and resources.
